The tie rod that bears the horizontal thrust of the arch end in an arch bridge is called a tie rod. It prevents the arch end support from generating horizontal thrust, making it a thrust free arch. According to the comparison of the stiffness between the tie rod and the arch rib, it can be divided into rigid tie rods and flexible tie rods. Rigid tie rods are subjected to both tension and pressure, while flexible tie rods are only subjected to tension.
